Router Optimization for Streaming

Your router settings can cause or fix buffering. Here is how to optimize your router for streaming.

Router Optimization for Streaming

Router placement

Place your router in a central, elevated location. Avoid corners, closets, and behind TVs. Walls and metal objects block WiFi signal. Higher placement = better coverage.

Enable QoS (Quality of Service)

QoS prioritizes streaming traffic over other traffic. Look in your router settings for QoS or Bandwidth Control. Set your streaming device as high priority.

Change WiFi channel

Use a WiFi Analyzer app to find the least crowded channel. On 2.4GHz, use channels 1, 6, or 11. On 5GHz, use any non-overlapping channel. Less crowded channels = less interference.

Update router firmware

Outdated router firmware causes stability issues. Check your router admin page for firmware updates. Some routers auto-update, others need manual updates.

Use 5GHz band for streaming

5GHz is faster and less crowded than 2.4GHz. Connect your streaming device to the 5GHz network. Reserve 2.4GHz for smart home devices and phones.

Reboot your router regularly

Restart your router once a month. This clears cache and refreshes the connection. Some routers have a scheduled reboot feature in settings.
