Internet Speed Test Guide for Streaming
Minimum speed requirements
SD streaming: 5 Mbps. HD streaming: 10 Mbps. 4K streaming: 25 Mbps. These are per-device. Multiple devices need more total bandwidth.
How to test your speed
Open speedtest.net in your browser. Test from the same device and location where you stream. Run the test 2-3 times for an average.
Test at the streaming location
WiFi speed at your TV may be much lower than at your computer. Test at the actual streaming location, not somewhere else in the house.
Interpreting results
Download speed is most important for streaming. If download is below 10 Mbps, you will buffer in HD. If below 5 Mbps, you will buffer in SD. Upload does not matter for streaming.
Ping and jitter
Ping (latency) should be under 50ms. Jitter should be under 10ms. High ping or jitter causes buffering even with good download speed.
If speed is too low
Contact your ISP about upgrading. Use Ethernet instead of WiFi. Disconnect other devices. Use a WiFi extender or mesh system. Lower streaming quality in your app.
