WiFi Streaming Issues and Fixes

WiFi is the #1 cause of streaming problems. Here is how to fix weak signal, dropouts, and slow speeds.

WiFi Streaming Issues and Fixes

Why WiFi causes streaming problems

WiFi signal is affected by distance, walls, interference from other devices, and network congestion. Streaming needs consistent speed, which WiFi struggles to provide.

Move closer to your router

WiFi signal drops with distance. If your streaming device is more than 20 feet from your router through walls, the signal is likely weak. Move closer or move the router.

Use 5GHz instead of 2.4GHz

5GHz WiFi is faster and less crowded than 2.4GHz. Connect your streaming device to the 5GHz network. 5GHz has shorter range but higher speed — ideal for streaming.

Reduce WiFi interference

Microwaves, baby monitors, Bluetooth devices, and neighbors' WiFi can interfere. Use WiFi Analyzer app to find a less crowded channel. Switch to channel 1, 6, or 11 on 2.4GHz.

Use a WiFi extender

Place a WiFi extender halfway between your router and streaming device. It boosts signal to areas with weak coverage. Choose a extender that supports 5GHz.

Upgrade to mesh WiFi

Mesh WiFi systems (Eero, Nest WiFi, Orbi) use multiple access points to cover your whole home with strong signal. More expensive than a single extender but much more effective.

Best solution: Ethernet

If possible, use a wired Ethernet connection. It is always faster and more stable than WiFi. Use a USB-to-Ethernet adapter for devices without an Ethernet port.
